Project Upstart
A Pre-apprenticeship Workforce Readiness Program
Upstart services are designed for high school seniors to young adults (18+) to receive life skills training, trade knowledge, workforce preparedness, character development, and mentoring.
Upstart is a dynamic 12 week program for anyone seeking to enter the construction trades. In order to work in the union trades, an apprenticeship must be applied for and an exam passed as one of the first steps. Apprenticeship exams test the applicant’s basic mathematical knowledge (including multiplication, long division, fractions, decimals, and measuring), reading comprehension, and mechanical reasoning. Most apprenticeship exams are the same or similar no matter which trade, and none of the exams allow a calculator to be used by the applicant.
Each week Upstart covers a mathematical concept, whether the participant needs a refresher on the topic or needs formal tutoring. We provide tailored instruction on each concept covered in apprenticeship exams by pairing up participants with a tutor based on their abilities and knowledge verified through our Applicant exam. These math concepts are reinforced through weekly “homework” assignments and assessed through mid term and final exams. Homework and exams help Upstart staff personalize the math material for each individual participant, so that they are the most prepared they can be should they apply to be an apprentice.
In addition to math concepts, reading comprehension is also covered as a group, with tips and advice on how to read and understand various passages. Mechanical reasoning also is taught throughout the program. The math, reading, and mechanical reasoning portion is worked on the first half of each weekly Upstart meeting via volunteer tutors who have backgrounds in tutoring and teaching.
Another aspect of the apprenticeship process is knowing what trades are available, having a prepared resume, knowing how to interview for a job, and understanding expectations of the workplace and workplace relationships.
Upstart’s weekly meetings cover overviews of different trades, resume writing with individualized assistance, interview training, and character development. Speakers are brought in throughout the program to address what a day in the life looks like of different trades, what unions and contractors are looking for in an apprentice, and how much that trade can make as an apprentice and as a journeyman. Upstart staff goes through safety, workplace etiquette, conflict resolution, integrity, and financial literacy. Not only are participants technically prepared for a career, but mentally and emotionally as well, through the Upstart program.
Upstart participants who successfully complete the program will have the opportunity to interview with contractors for potential employment in an interview night organized by the program. These contractors are partners and supporters of Upstart and the Resilient organization.
Upstart will also award scholarships to qualifying individuals to further their education and workforce training, in addition to providing reimbursement for their first set of boots and tools when they enter the workforce.
The Gene Haas Foundation aims to support young people by providing scholarships to ensure they have the skills necessary when entering the careers in CNC technologies and numerology. Students who have successfully completed the Upstart program are eligible to apply for the Gene Haas foundation scholarship. For more information and to apply, please contact our office.
