Upstart Volunteer

Upstart: Explorations Mentor

Overview: Explorations Mentors will facilitate discussions and answer questions about aspects of life and school that students may ask. Additionally, they will support critical thinking and creative expression through different independent projects of students’ choice. Overall, mentors will contribute to an environment that welcomes curiosity, promotes emotional and mental well being and safety, and engages intellectual stimulation and educational assistance. 

Location: at participating middle schools and/or the Resilient office

Reporting to: Resilient Staff

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Assisting in gathering and set up of supplies and materials necessary for class

  • Leading fulfilling and thought provoking discussions and devotionals

  • Assisting with homework on an as-needed basis

  • Assisting in the upkeep and organization of Google Classroom

  • Participating in training and debrief sessions with the other volunteers and Resilient staff

  • Being a shoulder to cry on or an ear to listen

  • Assisting in clean up and take down of supplies and materials

Impact of Role

  • Students will have a safe person to whom they can ask questions, seek counsel, and get to know the character of God

  • Students will have opportunities to explore options for their future

  • Students will develop and improve life skills, character, as well as math skills

Qualifications

  • Christ follower preferred

  • Must have completed Volunteer Application and Background Check with favorable results

  • Must be able to walk, stand, bend over, for extended periods of time

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds

  • Basic math knowledge a plus

  • Must be able to drive to locations

  • Patient

  • Friendly

  • Experience with children is a plus

Time Commitment

  • 2 hours per day, one day per week for 12 weeks

  • Option for recurring position

Upstart: Career Exploration Tutor

Overview: Career Exploration Tutors will administer math lessons to high school students while introducing students to potential career paths in the trades. 

Location: at participating high schools and/or the Resilient office

Reporting to: Resilient Staff

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Assisting in gathering and set up of supplies and materials necessary for class

  • Teaching math lessons and assigning homework

  • Grading math assignments and tests, including mid-term and final exams

  • Assisting in the upkeep and organization of Google Classroom

  • Participating in training and debrief sessions with the other volunteers and Resilient staff

  • Asking helpful questions that participants may answer to get a better understanding of what is being taught

  • Assisting in clean up and take down of supplies and materials

Impact of Role

  • Young adults will have the opportunity to learn and explore possible career paths for themselves

  • Students will have a safe person to whom they can ask questions, seek counsel, and get to know the character of God

  • Students will develop and improve life skills, character, as well as math skills

  • Young adults will have opportunities for jobs and education that they might not have been able to have on their own

  • Young adults will be able to improve and increase their math skills and math test scores, giving them more credits to graduate

Upstart: Career Readiness Tutor

Overview: Career Readiness Tutors will administer math lessons to high school students with appropriate math skills that will prepare them to take the apprenticeship exam, as well as help train workforce skills such as resume writing and interviewing.

Location: at participating schools and/or the Resilient office

Reporting to: Resilient Staff

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Assisting in gathering and set up of supplies and materials necessary for class

  • Teaching math lessons and assigning homework

  • Grading math assignments and tests, including mid-term and final exams

  • Assisting in the upkeep and organization of Google Classroom

  • Tailoring lessons based on exam results and progress of students

  • Participating in training and debrief sessions with the other volunteers and Resilient staff

  • Asking helpful questions that participants may answer to get a better understanding of what is being taught

  • Assisting in clean up and take down of supplies and materials

  • Young adults will have the opportunity to learn and explore possible career paths for themselves

Monthly Meal

Family Dinner Volunteer 

Overview: Family Dinner Volunteers will assist in setting up our meal space, greeting guests who come into the space, serving guests food, running activities, and cleaning up afterwards.

Location: The Salvation Army of Villa Park  (1s415 Summit Avenue, Villa Park, IL)

Reporting to: Resilient Staff

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Assist in set up of meal, including tables, chairs, plates, silverware, and the food itself

  • Greet guests that come into the facility, directing them to tables and seats

  • Engage and talk with guests

  • Prepare set up of food in food serving designated areas with containers and utensils, organized in a cohesive and efficient manner

  • Provide a friendly and welcoming demeanor to guests who walk into the space

  • Direct guests to check in

  • Offer any free items or snacks available at the check-in table

  • Inform guests about resources and programs being displayed at the check-in table

  • Serve food on plates to guests in appropriate portion sizes to ensure equal amounts for each guest, taking into consideration guests’ preferences

  • Help guests with plates, napkins, drinks, and whatever else they may need

  • Engage and talk with guests at tables if time allows

  • Ensure each guest has enough to eat and drink

  • Be kind and friendly as guests leave, offering to carry groceries from the food pantry

  • Keep tables, floors, and other areas with food clean and tidy

  • Help pack up and store leftover food items

  • Assist in clean up of plates, food items, and put away of tables and chairs

Impact of Role

  • Members of the community get access to a free hot meal, one they might not have gotten that day

  • Members of the community can meet others and engage in fellowship

  • The surrounding community can get to know each other and each other’s needs

  • Members of the community don’t get overlooked

Qualifications

  • Must have completed Volunteer Application and Background Check with favorable results

  • Must be able to walk, stand, bend over, for extended periods of time

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds

  • Must be able to drive to the Salvation Army

  • 2 hours per month, every Third Thursday

  • Option to serve regularly on a monthly basis
